ChatGPT in Native Language Teaching : Local Ukrainian Experience

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) in education has significantly shifted the emphasis from traditional teaching to individual learning. AI technologies, such as chatbots, text generators, and automatic assessment platforms, open up new perspectives for flexible language learning for both teachers and students. While large language models are becoming more and more helpful in teaching foreign languages, as evidenced by a significant number of studies, the lack of established methods for using AI in teaching the native language can lead to a decrease in the efficiency of the educational process or even to harmful consequences of its use. The study aims to analyze the experience of using AI, particularly ChatGPT, in teaching the native (Ukrainian) language. We will systematize the practices of using AI in language education, describe our experience of using ChatGPT in teaching Ukrainian, and present the results of surveys evaluating the use of ChatGPT in teaching the native language to students of different Ukrainian universities.
