У більшості випадків діє правило: чим щільніше матеріал, тим коефіцієнт його теплопровідності вище, тобто тепло від нагрітої кімнати цегляного будинку буде йти швидше, ніж тепло кімнати дерев'яного будинку, якщо ширина стін буде однаковою. Пов'язано це з властивостями повітря. Саме повітря має низьку теплопровідність і тому матеріали з великою кількістю повітряних пір є кращими теплоізоляційними матеріалами.
