The qualification work investigates the indicators of survival rate, quality
status, and growth of Scots pine forest cultures aged 1 to 5 years. The experimental part of the work was carried out in fresh pine-oak forest conditions (B2) of the Lebedyn forest district on clearcuttings after principal logging. The
features of growth and adaptation of young stands were analyzed depending on
their composition and schemes of joint planting of Scots pine with common oak,
red oak, and silver birch. Based on the 2025 inventory data, the status of stands at
the early stages of development was evaluated.
It has been established that at the age of 1–2 years, species mixing schemes
do not yet have a significant impact on the height and root collar diameter of pine
seedlings due to the absence of interspecific competition. The average height of
one-year-old cultures is 15.2 cm, and two-year-old ones –32.6 cm. However, a
noticeable difference in survival rate and quality classes was revealed. Among
one-year-old stands (area of 18.1 ha), the best survival rate (98.0%) and 100%
output of the 1st quality class were demonstrated by the scheme of 9 parts of
Scots pine and 1 part of silver birch. At the age of two years (area of 11.8 ha),
pine-oak cultures proved to be more stable, specifically the schemes of 9 parts of
Scots pine and 1 part of common oak as well as 9 parts of Scots pine and 1 part of
red oak, where 100% of the areas were assigned to the 1st quality class.
The final evaluation of 5-year-old stands (area of 17.4 ha) confirmed the high success of reforestation: 91.4% of the areas correspond to the 1st quality class, and the scheme of 9 parts of Scots pine and 1 part of silver birch ensured an absolute "very good" status. To ensure a high initial survival rate, it is advisable to
use the scheme of 9 parts of Scots pine and 1 part of silver birch, and for the
formation of stable and valuable stands in the future –the schemes of 9 parts of
Scots pine and 1 part of common oak and 9 parts of Scots pine and 1 part of red
oak, subject to compliance with planting technology and forest maintenance.
