Abstract:
(Viscum album
(Acer platanoides),
(Robinia pseudoacacia).
Viscum
Description:
The paper investigates the peculiarities of the spread of mistletoe (Viscum
album L.) in roadside protective forest belts of the Sumy region. The research was
conducted during 2024–2025 along the Sumy–Poltava highway within the areas
near the settlements of Hrebenykivka, Boromlia, Trostianets, Klementove,
Okhtyrka, Khukhra, Kotelva, and Velyka Rublivka.
The study analyzes the biological and ecological characteristics of white
mistletoe, the peculiarities of its parasitism on woody plants, factors influencing its
spread, and its impact on the sanitary condition of protective plantations. The
characteristics of roadside forest belts within the research route, their structural
features, and the species composition of woody and shrub vegetation are presented.
It was established that the most common tree species in roadside protective
plantations were Norway maple (Acer platanoides), white poplar (Populus alba),
and black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia). A significant spread of white mistletoe
was detected within most of the studied sites. The highest level of infestation was
recorded on Norway maple and white poplar. The most intensive spread of
mistletoe was observed on old trees with well-lit crowns and signs of physiological
weakening.
The research showed that the mass spread of Viscum album is accompanied
by crown thinning, dieback of tree tops, drying of branches, and deterioration of
the overall sanitary condition of roadside plantations. Photographic documentation
confirmed the presence of areas with severe and very severe infestation of woody
plants by white mistletoe.
Based on the obtained results, recommendations were proposed for
improving the sanitary condition of protective forest belts, monitoring the spread
of mistletoe, and reconstructing degraded plantations.
