Стаття фокусується на феномені інформаційно-освітніх середовищ в освіті та специфіці їх використання в умовах дистанційного навчання у вищій школі. В статті досліджуються теоретичні засади сучасної наукової парадигми. Теоретичний аналіз застосовувався, щоб вивчити класичні та сучасні наукові роботи по специфіці використання інформаційно-освітніх систем в навчанні.
Висвітлюються основні принципи відкритої освіти та аналізується, які принципи є засадами для появи та функціонування дистанційної освіти. В статті розглядається, яким чином дається визначення інформаційно-освітнім середовищам в науковому світі та аналізуються найбільш відомі дефініції.
